What’s It Like?

Shibuya is a vibrant area located in the heart of Tokyo, particularly popular among young people and tourists. The iconic Statue of Hachiko, the faithful dog, stands in front of Shibuya Station and is beloved by many.

Shibuya boasts famous landmarks like the Shibuya Scramble Crossing and numerous skyscrapers, offering diverse shopping, dining, cafes, and bars for entertainment.

Moreover, Shibuya is currently undergoing a once-in-a-century redevelopment, with new landmarks and cultural facilities emerging. Cultural venues such as Shibuya Hikarie and Bunkamura host art exhibitions, theater performances, and other events, attracting a large number of visitors.

The area around Shibuya Station is popular with young people and foreigners, and it becomes extremely crowded during Halloween and New Year’s. However, due to frequent incidents related to drinking, an ordinance was enacted in 2019 prohibiting outdoor drinking at night during these periods. Nevertheless, since alcohol-related troubles continued to occur outside these times as well, this rule will be enforced year-round starting in October 2024. Specifically, drinking on the streets in designated areas around Shibuya Station will be prohibited from 6 PM to 5 AM. Of course, drinking in bars and restaurants is not subject to this regulation. In other words, you must not drink alcohol on the streets.
