What’s It Like?

The history of Tsukudajima began in the early 17th century when fishermen from Osaka were invited to settle here by the first Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The neighborhood still retains old narrow streets that offer a unique view against the backdrop of high-rise buildings. The Tsukishima area was created through land reclamation during the Meiji era. Passing through a street lined with about 80 Monja-yaki (savory pancake) restaurants, you can cross the Kachidoki-bashi Bridge to the other side of the Sumida River, where you’ll find the Tsukiji Outer Market. Even after the fish market moved to Toyosu in 2018, the outer market remained and has maintained its former bustling atmosphere.
