Starting from an Artificial Island created during the Edo Period
Alleyways evoking Nostalgia amidst Towering Skyscrapers
Monja-yaki experience
Starting from Ecchujima Station, crossing the Aioi Bridge, you can see that this place is an island. The history of Tsukudajima began in the early 17th century when fishermen from Osaka were invited to settle here by the first Shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. The neighborhood still retains old narrow streets that offer a unique view against the backdrop of high-rise buildings. The Tsukishima area was created through land reclamation during the Meiji era. Passing through a street lined with about 80 monjayaki (savory pancake) *1 restaurants, you can cross the Kachidoki Bridge to the other side of the Sumida River, where you’ll find the Tsukiji Outer Market *2.
[Notes]
1 Monjayaki
The Japanese local food that originated in Tokyo, where loosely mixed wheat flour is cooked on an iron griddle and eaten.
2 Tsukiji Outer Market
Even after the fish market relocated to Toyosu, the Tsukiji Outer Market remains bustling. It’s where former workers of the fish market used to get their meals and tools. With a focus on fresh seafood, the market boasts around 450 shops, including restaurants and equipment stores.
