Experience Life in the Edo Period
Mitsubishi-preserved Daimyo Garden
Town of Sumo and Hokusai
On the eastern side of the Sumida River, you can explore a unique area. At the Fukagawa Edo Museum, you’ll find a faithful reproduction of residences from the Edo period, giving you a sensation akin to time-traveling. Afterward, you can visit the nearby Kiyosumi Garden. Originally a daimyo’s garden, it was purchased by Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of the Mitsubishi Group, during the Meiji era and transformed into a magnificent stonework garden. Today, it can be enjoyed as a public park. Following a delicious lunch at a nearby sushi restaurant, take the subway to Ryogoku, a place famous for sumo wrestling and the artist Katsushika Hokusai*1. Explore sumo-related facilities, and visit the Sumida Hokusai Museum. This area is home to the Kokugikan, where grand sumo tournaments are held in January, May, and September. You’ll also pay a visit to a shrine associated with sumo, Nomino-sukune Shrine*2.
