Tour Overview & Story

Why is Kawagoe called “Little Edo” (Ko-Edo)?

It is not merely because of its traditional streetscapes, but because of its vital role in protecting Tokyo (formerly Edo) during the Samurai era. Positioned as a crucial northern defense post, Kawagoe was ruled by the Shogun’s most trusted lords.

When fire swept through Edo Castle in the 17th century, the Shogunate dismantled and moved parts of the castle to Kawagoe. Today, while Tokyo has modernized, the authentic spirit and architectural treasures of Edo survive here in Kawagoe.
