A former student of mine who grew up here shared that local farming families used to keep a small wooden boat on hand, ready to load their valuables and evacuate whenever heavy rains hit.
That all changed in 2006 with the completion of the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (Shutoken Gaikaku Hosuiro)—one of the world’s largest underground flood diversion facilities. Since then, this massive engineering marvel has protected the region from catastrophic floods.

Note on Expenses: Guests are responsible for covering all tour entry tickets (including the guide’s ticket) and transportation costs between Omiya Station and the site (train, taxi, etc.).

G-CANS offers 7 different tour courses in total. While the basic “Underground Shrine Course” or “Light-up Course” is highly recommended and most popular among international visitors due to their relaxed pace, I can accompany you on any of the options offered by the facility—including the adventurous Vertical Shaft (Pit) Course and Impeller Exploration Course!
Note: Specialized equipment (harness, chest waders, etc.) is required for deep-exploration courses. Please feel free to consult me if you are interested in these advanced tours. Please note that longer courses will incur an additional guide fee.
Step-by-Step Booking Process
Because facility tickets open exactly one month prior to the tour date, I follow a two-step booking system:
Step 1: Reserve Your Guide (Early Inquiry)
Contact me in advance to lock in guide availability for your requested date.
Step 2: Book Facility Tickets (1 Month Prior)
On the ticket release day (1 month before the tour date), you will purchase the facility tickets online for both your group and the guide.
Step 3: Finalize Timetable & Meeting
Whichever time slot you secure, I am happy to accommodate it. Once ticket times are confirmed, I will finalize our meeting time at Omiya Station and get ready for the tour!
Flexibility First: Book me a month in advance, and I will match whatever G-CANS tour slot you secure.

Why Hire a Private Interpreter for G-cans?
- Higher Availability: Japanese-language slots are far more plentiful than English-only slots, making it much easier to secure your preferred time.
- Full Compliance: The venue officially permits and recommends non-Japanese speakers to attend regular tours when accompanied by an interpreter.
- Local Guidance: Navigating the local train and taxi/walking routes in Kasukabe is effortless when accompanied by a local guide.
Important Requirements & Safety Guidelines
- 116 Steps (Required Fitness): You must be able to walk up and down 116 steps independently, as there are no elevators or escalators in the underground facility.
- Footwear & Attire: Please wear comfortable walking shoes (sneakers). High heels, sandals, and slippery shoes are strictly prohibited for safety reasons.
- Underground Temperature: The facility remains cool (around 14–15°C / 57–59°F) year-round. We highly recommend bringing a light jacket, even in summer.
- Possible Weather Cancellations: While cancellations are quite rare, please note that as this is an active disaster-prevention facility, tours may be suddenly canceled or altered in the event of heavy rain or operational water storage/cleaning.
- Safety Rules: Please secure all personal items. Dropping objects from the stairs is extremely dangerous. Always follow instructions provided during the tour.
